Good morning. The slowest ace recorded in ATP history was 26 MPH. Surprisingly, it wasn’t your serve an underhand serve. Now let’s dive in.

Miami Open

Time to add someone new to your bench

Here’s the headline: top seeds went down left and right in the early rounds of the Miami Open.

  • Korda beat Alcaraz

  • Cerundolo beat Medvedev

  • Atmane beat FAA

  • Tsitsipas beat De Minaur

  • Quinn beat Ruud

  • Linette beat Swiatek

The reaction from tons of tennis fans? Well, at least March Madness is on.

How I imagine James Blake (Tournament Director) explaining to sponsors how he’s going to make up for lower than expected ticket sales and viewership this year

While that’s true (C’mon UConn), I think many fans have this backwards. When the big names go home early, there’s an opportunity: it's time to add someone new to your bench.

Why? Because there’s so much more to the game than our favorites. There are tons of up and comers, players with great stories, and lots of personalities.

Here's how to do it

Go find a globe — one that’s in 3rd grade classrooms that spins and pinches your finger in the plastic ring. Give it a spin. Wherever your finger lands, find a player from that country who's still in the draw. Root for them like they're on your 8.0 mixed doubles team (so loud that you get yelled at by a Karen).

Here’s an example:

Francisco Cerundolo — the guy who’s last name sounds like a fancy bottle of red, and who just knocked out an in-form Medvedev.

Hi Unforced Error peoples, it’s nice to meet you. Fun fact about me: I sing in the shower (tennis.com)

26 years old. Argentinian. Played a little at the University of South Carolina, and now has the chance to surpass his all-time high ranking (18) if he can make the quarters or better in Miami this week.

A very different (and more interesting imo) story than, “Carlos won his 9th slam and is going to get the number 9 tattoo’d on his 9th toe!”

That's the point of the injury inducing globe. You're not just adding a name to your mental roster. You're picking up a thread — a backstory, a style, a country — that makes every match you watch that little bit richer.

The tennis tour rolls through 30-plus countries every year. Players show up from places with wildly different tennis ecosystems, who learned the game in completely different ways. That variety is the best part.

Think of it like America

(Facebook/@Memezar)

Yes, there's the Empire State Building, Yosemite, and Disneyland. Those are great. But America is also home to Philly cheesesteaks with "wiz" sauce. Portland Tesla owners with "I bought it before Elon went crazy" stickers. A diner in rural Ohio that's been open since 1967 and makes the best pie you've ever had.

The landmarks get all the attention. But there’s also flavor elsewhere.

The tennis tour is the same. The superstars are the landmarks. But the characters who make the sport actually interesting — the ones with weird playing styles, great stories, and something to prove — they're scattered all over the draw.

And right now, with half the top of the draw already on a flight home, the draw is wide open.

Go find your fighter. The tournament just got more interesting.

Hey gang - I would really like to wear these heels for a day at the US Open this year, but Paige (Tommy Paul’s fiancé) won’t send them to me unless I get to 1000 subscribers (794 right now). Could you help a girl out and encourage one of your friends, family members, or gal pals to subscribe? Thanks! 🙏

Bryan (we’re on a first name basis) pinky promised he’d work with me after Ben’s career. But he did say up front, “I can’t fix your forehand man.” 😭
